CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

PANEL: WORLD SEMIOTICS, ANTHROPOLOGY, CULTURAL AND AREA STUDIES, Beyond Geopolitics

Abstract

The linguistic turn in the 1960s gave rise to a new exploration and appreciation of space (social, symbolic, imagined etc.). Area Studies was already an established common field of interest between colonial powers and academia at the same time. In the era that followed the crisis of representation in Anthropology and Cultural Studies, the examination of space, culture, and borders became a prominent field for studying and deconstructing world politics.

Drawing on the afore-mentioned genealogy, the panel will explore how these epistemological shifts and the ensuing interdisciplinary approaches can help us revisit the concepts of ‘Area Studies’ and ‘regional traditions’, while at the same time, both Social Anthropology and Cultural studies inform the content of academic curricula: what do categories like ‘world’, ‘globality’, ‘region’, ‘locality’, ‘culture’, imagination, representation and creativity etc. mean and signify today?

Furthermore, we are exploring the new challenges and possibilities, geographies and genealogies of Area Studies engaged previously to current Western-centric geopolitics, which could generate critical and deconstructive approaches of anthropology and semiotics.

• What are the new methodological fields of knowledge and belonging?
• What kind of metaphors, representations and performances do they offer as analytical possibilities of understanding, complementary to the social analysis?
• How could an Area Studies perspective create new epistemological challenges, bringing together politics and dispositions of the elites and the powerless?
• In what ways do critical anthropological and semiotic approaches transcend or (re)frame, and produce cultural, material and other symbolic boundaries related to colonial technologies?
• Are there possibilities to establish comparative perspectives inside/outside the Area that could stress the significant experiences of the powerless, such as minorities, refugees, women?
• How do they create such decolonial ‘context’ giving voice and meaning to the ‘other correlated or co-creative stories’ than the national histories?

Mother Teresa University in Skopje in partnership with University of Sassari, Italy and University “St.Kliment Ohridski” Bitola,  is organizing the international conference on the topic: “Migration and development: Looking Forward Post-Covid-19”.

The conference will be held in the premises of the Mother Teresa University in Skopje, Macedonia on June 10th  2021. Participants can choose between attending the conference in person and presenting virtually.  

All interested applicants must submit an abstract of max. 300 words, Arial 12-p, paper title with all authors, affiliations and contact details.

Η “Λέσχη των Σπουδών Φύλου” σε συνεργασία με τη “Λέσχη Εθνογραφίας” του Εργαστηρίου Μελέτης του Πολιτισμού, των Συνόρων και του Κοινωνικού Φύλου του Τμήματος Βαλκανικών, Σλαβικών & Ανατολικών Σπουδών υποστηρίζουν και φιλοξενούν την έκδοση νέου ετήσιου περιοδικού με τίτλο: «EIRINI-Ανθρωπολογικό Περιοδικό για τη Μελέτη του Φύλου, της Πολιτισμικής Ετερογένειας και των Κοινωνικών Διακρίσεων (https://ireneanthropologic.wixsite.com/website).

Το περιοδικό θα φιλοξενεί δημοσιεύσεις εργασιών και μελέτες μεταπτυχιακών φοιτητών/φοιτητριών, υπ. Δρ, και νέων ερευνητών/ερευνητριών, αποφοίτων του ΒΣΑΣ και άλλων τμημάτων του ΠΑΜΑΚ, αλλά και εργασίες νέων ερευνητών/ερευνητριών που αποφοίτησαν από προγράμματα ανθρωπολογίας, κοινωνικών και πολιτισμικών σπουδών του εσωτερικού και του εξωτερικού, τα οποία αναδεικνύουν την πολιτισμική ετερογένεια και τις κοινωνικές διακρίσεις, με προσανατολισμό στις σπουδές φύλου και την υποστήριξη της ισότητας.

Ας σημειωθεί ότι ο σχεδιασμός και η οργάνωση του περιοδικού ξεκίνησε με πρωτοβουλία μεταπτυχιακών φοιτητριών και φοιτητών του Τμήματος Βαλκανικών Σλαβικών και Ανατολικών Σπουδών, προς τιμήν της μνήμης της μεταπτυχιακής φοιτήτριας Ειρήνης Τσιολάκη. Στην Επιστημονική και Συντακτική Επιτροπή συμπεριλαμβάνονται από κοινού καθηγητές/καθηγήτριες και φοιτητές/ φοιτήτριες του Τμήματος ΒΣΑΣ, με τη συμμετοχή και υποστήριξη μελών της Επιτροπής Ισότητας των Φύλων του Πανεπιστημίου Μακεδονίας.

November 12-13, 2021 – Princeton University and Columbia University in the City of New York

Princeton University’s Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies and the Department of History at Columbia University invite scholars at all stages of their careers to submit proposals for individual papers to be given at a two-day international history conference scheduled for Friday to Saturday, November 12-13, 2021. The conference will explore the social, political, cultural and economic interconnections between the Greek War of Independence and the Americas.

The conference, which participates in global bicentennial celebrations of the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, is intended to further historical thinking connecting histories of an age of revolutions on multiple continents. It may lend itself to work in a comparative vein or comparisons may arise through discussion of intensive case studies. The organizers anticipate work that fuels rethinking sovereignty, peoplehood, and a world of nations and empires through actors and processes.

Themes to be explored include models of revolution in the Americas in rethinking the Greek Independence struggle; the liberal international moment of the 1820s in southern Europe and connections with the independence movements in South America; attitudes within Greece towards the Americas and the move to independence in the western hemisphere; questions of republics and slavery composed by African-Americans in 1820s; response to the slavery question in the Morea. Approaches to foreign and economic affairs including intervention and non-intervention policies developed in the Americas, such as the Monroe Doctrine and the policy of states in the Americas toward an independent Greece; the rise of an international market for sovereign debt and the debt boom/bust of the 1820s; economic and technological aspects of American involvement including steamship purchases; the suppression of piracy; the involvement of Protestant missions; the rescue of Greek orphans. Intellectual history and cultural and artistic responses, such as international Benthamism and radical constitutionalism; novel approaches to philhellenes of the Western Hemisphere, including classicizing political thought (e.g., Jefferson, Koraes); and the impact of philhellenism on American life, culture, and institutions (e.g., the cases of Francis Lieber and Samuel Gridley Howe); rethinking American philhellenes in Greece; the circulation of memoirs, journalism, captive and travel literature and the literary representation of the Greek war in the United States; memories of 1821 and Greek-American life over the following century and a half.

The conference is intended to meet over two sequential days, one each at the respective campuses of the hosting institutions.  If the conference is held in person as planned, speakers selected will be provided four nights lodging (2 nights in Princeton, 2 nights in New York City, booked on their behalf) and reimbursement of a fixed amount toward travel expenses. Selected participants should however be prepared for possible changes in the modality of the conference if continuing public health and safety concerns prevail against or limit physical assembly. Health and safety concerns might even dictate a change in the dates of the conference. The organizers commit to making a decision in good time regarding modality.  Speakers should not purchase tickets for travel that are not fully refundable until they are notified by the organizers to do so.  Should the conference be held virtually or in hybrid mode, there will be no reimbursements towards unexecuted travel expenses, and should the conference be held in person on different dates, there be will no reimbursement for travel arrangements made with respect to the original dates.

Deadline for proposals is Monday, February 8, 2021. Applicants should submit an abstract of no longer than 300 words and a one-page summary curriculum vitae to Sara Brooks (sbrooks@princeton.edu), Secretary to the Program Committee.
